Women of Rajasthan by Pamela Attree

Most women in Rajasthan do not have an easy life by western standards - fetching and carrying water, laundry at the nearest river or lake, working on road maintenance, selling fruit and vegetables in the market etc. are the order of the day. However, they appear to be contented with their life, and are proud but friendly. Above all they are colourful. Rajasthan is mostly very arid, especially so this year (2003) when there is drought in many areas as a result of failed rains for several years. Perhaps the women wear incredibly colourful dress as a contrast to the almost universally dun-coloured land.
